a congress woman shot in the head in a deadly shooting rampage in arizona. at least six people killed, including a federal judge and a 9-year-old girl. 13 other people were injured, including a number of the congress woman's staff, and tonight, new information, that the suspect in custody did not act alone. >> good evening, i'm ann notarangelo. representative gabrielle giffords is in critical condition and she was in fact the target of the attack. karen brown is in tucson where the witnesses tackled the suspect. karen. >> reporter: amazing stories out of the safeway store. truly amazing. people describing, thinking they were having a normal saturday morning, and all of a sudden this man just opened fire, and people were collapsing to the floor, and bleeding, and now, law

enforcement says that the suspect used a semi automatic pistol to basically take down as many people as he possibly could. there are vigils going on tonight for congress woman giffords springing up from tucson to phoenix and everyone is just really praying for her actually tonight. so at this point, we are learning more about the suspect. they say he is a very troubled man with a criminal background. police rushed victims to waiting helicopters after a gunman opened fire at a public meeting held by u.s. representative gabrielle giffords to meet her constituents. giffords was shot in the head and rushed into surgery. >> she is in critical condition. the neurosurgeon finished operating on her and at the current time i can tell you i'm very optimistic about recovery. >> reporter: the bullet that hit giffords doctors say went in one side of the head and out the other. and the victims include judge john rolls and a 9-year-old

girl. and an aide to giffords. >> i was three feet from her and i was lucky to be not in the line of fire. i'm shaken to my core and i'm lucky to get out of there alive. >> reporter: it happened at the safeway shopping center in tucson. giffords' office held meetings while she was in town for concerns of the people of the district. the gunman identified as 22- year-old jared loughner of tucson was captured shortly after the shooting, and authorities say he opened fire using a pistol with an extended magazine. president obama spoke about the tragedy late this afternoon. >> our heart goes out to the family members of those who have been slain. we are going to get to the bottom of this. and we're going to get through this. >> reporter: giffords was the target of anger in the past. her office was vandalized after she voted in favor of the health care bill last march. the congress woman is married to astronaut mark kelly who is commander of the space shuttle endeavour expected to launch this spring. president obama sends the director of the fbi to arizona

to oversee the investigation into the shooting. and now we are being told that the government offices for congress woman giffords have been evacuated because of a suspicious package. so things continue to develop here. and we will continue to keep you up dated. ann? >> what can you tell us, we're hearing something about the fact that maybe authorities say there wasn't just one suspect. there may be somebody else involved. do you know anything about that? >> reporter: yes, you know what, during the press conference, first the sheriff said there was a second suspect that they were looking for, but now, they're calling him a person of interest, but one thing that they do not waiver from is that they don't believe that the suspect came to the store alone. and they don't believe that he necessarily acted alone. >> do they say whether or not they think that there could be another shooting, that there is somebody else who has the propensity for doing this? >> reporter: you know what? they say that at this point, they don't believe anybody is in danger. that's all they would say. they said that they believe he is a white man in his 50s.

they say that they have a name. they say they have a picture. but they are not willing to release it at this point. >> all right, karen brown, in tucson, thank you very much for the update. let's now go to don knapp at the delancey street foundation where senate minority leader nancy pelosi spoke about the attack on her colleague. >> reporter: former speaker pelosi called for prayers for representative, from arizona, giffords, and for the victims and other family, as well. while john garramendi, a u.s. representative told us he suspected a climate of overheated rhetoric may have contributed to the shooting. >> reporter: the gathering at the delancey street foundation was a new years foundation featuring former speaker of the house nancy pelosi and she began by calling this day a sad day for america. >> we stand before you with the deepest sadness for the act of violence that was committed

against our colleague, congress woman tkpwaáb gabi giffords, her staff, her constituents and now we know a federal judge as well. >> reporter: pelosi describes giffords as a great patriotic american. part of a new generation of brilliant leaders. >> as i thank all of you, my constituents, let us join in prayer with gabi giffords' constituents in arizona as well who have suffered a terrible loss today. >> reporter: congressman john garamendi suggested the motive for the shooting may be political. >> emotions are hot in arizona. they are across the nation. during the last campaign, and the run up to the health care bill, her office was attacked. she was threatened. many others across the nation, democrats, who have voted for that were threatened. >> reporter: he said he saw firsthand the extremes of the politics in the u.s. during the fight over health care reform in the washington.

>> and there are several hundred people outside with signs. saying kill pelosi. out of the chamber, several members of congress went out on the balcony and cheered them on. >> reporter: it is, says garmendi, time for america to reflect. >> as elected members of congress, those that went out and rallied, increased the heat, amongst that crowd, should also reflect. >> reporter: pelosi did not speak of any motive for the shootings. but she did praise the accomplishments of the democratically controlled congress in health care reform and don't ask don't tell, and in wall street restrictions, and she also said that she will continue to fight very strongly any efforts to overturn health care reform. ann? >> don knapp, in san francisco, thank you. more reaction is coming in from the rest of the bay area delegation.

congress woman jackie spears called giffords a talented and rising star. she said this, quote, horrendous act of violence, is unspeakable, and an assault on our democracy. congress woman barbara lee of oakland called the attacks, quote, a reprehensible act of violence that should be condemned by all. both women said their thoughts and prayers are with congress woman giffords and family and staff and constituents. we will continue to monitor the story and bring you any new information as it becomes available. . oklahoma's new mayor hit the streets today hoping to zero in on the cause of so much violence in east oakland. jean quan says she wants to improve the city's image. anne makovec says mayor quan admits she will need some help. >> reporter: it is an effort to improve east oakland. mayor jean quan and the assistant police chief went door to door. >> one of our toughest beats that we have. >> reporter: it is where six people were shot earlier this year at 89th and d street, a

block from where we met her. >> i think it is very scary, because all of the shooting, it is scary, and every time i hear bullets, i just hide in my room. >> reporter: the area is racked with poverty. only three of 10 boys graduate high school. >> our goal is to get the neighborhood itself organize sod i don't have to personally come out here and knock on doors every day. but if i have to, i will. >> reporter: quan is letting people know about a new library, though it already has a broken window. she is starting a school for new parents, and opening a free clinic paid for with grants. >> we will make a dent. >> it is all about her intentions. you got to have a kind heart and really want to do something so people can see it. >> it takes a lot of courage on the community's part. >> reporter: the courage to see a better place. >> like no more shooting. >> change is not easy. but i think it is awful, if you

supervisors. it now has mericans.. includi four new faces grace san francisco's board of supervisors. and four asian americans, including reappointed president, making it the most ethically adverse board ever. and joe vasquez and how they will choose the interim mayor. >> reporter: as the new san francisco board of supervisors swears in, many are wondering will they be prone to dramatic clashes like the last board. the answer came quickly. >> i would ask that my name be withdrawn from consideration. >> reporter: as moderate supervisor shawn elsburn was knot nominated for the post for president of the board, bowed out as a show of unity, paving the way for david kháu to be re-

elected to the post. >> i'm toxed about i the supervisor did -- i'm touched by what the supervisor did. it was a little unexpected. and we do have a lot of work that we need to do. >> my children, i'm so thankful -- >> reporter: several supervisors got emotional as the moment sunk in. >> seeing so many of the people that i've worked with, that have mentored me, that have made me a part of their community and their family. >> i'm humbled. i'm excited. i'm so honored to serve. >> reporter: one of the first orders of business, formalizing the mayor. ed lee is still out of town and expected to fly back tomorrow. >> reporter: lee, the city administrator was in taiwan when he found out the outgoing board appointed him to be interim mayor. gavin newsom will swear in as lieutenant governor monday, paving the way for the new

board to make the appointment official on tuesday. joe vasquez, cbs 5. a 15-year-old girl has suffered life-threatening injuries in an overnight hit- and-run accident at the busy intersection of camden and basskin in san jose about 1:00 a.m. police say the girl and her boyfriend were in the cross walk. they are searching for a silver or gray japanese made vehicle. and a settlement has been reached over plans for a bridge as part of the 100 point naval shipyard re-development. environmental groups sued saying 491-foot bridge could permanently damage wildlife. as part of the segment, the habitat areas will be improved. mayor newsom calls the development one of the most important in the city's history. finally, a weekend without raindrops. lawrence is next with more on when the fog will clear.

all right, so we don't have rain but we have fog. lawrence? >> it has been thick. it has been cold over the last few days. and it continues out there tonight. fog arn the skies and not much breakup except at the coastline. would he have some sunshine and the fog -- we have some sunshine. and the fog moving into the interior valleys today. and it continues now. socked in with low clouds and fog. it will thicken up overnight and be careful, in the interior valleys and cold front diving through the state and not very strong and just about strong enough to mix out the low clouds and the fog. so it looks like we will see more of that overnight tonight

and tomorrow morning, it will be in place, and dense fog early on especially in the north and east bays and as we head through the day, it looks like a little more sunshine and dry air will start to mix in, and well, we are hoping to warm the temperatures up a few degrees and it is chilly cold as we head to the afternoon hours. speaking of cold, 39 degrees in fairfield. 44 in livermore. and 41 in san rafael. and 45 degrees in san francisco. it looks like the cold air will hold on for another day. changes in the works. high pressure is sitting overhead. the cold air is finally driving through behind it. and mixing out some of the fog. but for tonight, still foggy around the bay area. the patchy fog will be in place. tomorrow morning, in most parts of the bay area early on. let's take a look. roll you to 7:00 a.m. thick fog to begin with. and watch what happens at the beginning of the day. and more of a northerly component to the wind development and you start to clear out the skies and bringing move sunshine and we will try to warm up some temperatures outside and not a heat wave but nice to see the sun anyway.

55 in san jose. and about 47 degrees, still cool, in san rafael and it looks like as we head in toward the next couple of days we may get rain but that may warm us up and help mix out the low clouds and fog and the chance of showers returns on tuesday and i think a chance of showers continues into wednesday. a better chance of rain moving in come thursday but possibly staying wet and unsettled into next weekend. that is a look at weather. here is gary with sports. >> thanks. the regular season one thing. the playoffs are clearly another. how dare you and me say the seahawks don't belong. local guy, deshawn lynch and seattle, gave it all to the champs. was it enough? stick around to find out because sports is next. the n-f-l playoffs k,,

get too excited. seattle led 24-20 at the half and added to the lead in the half. and hasselbeck with another bomb. mike williams. i got it. yes he does. hauls it in. and hasselbeck threw for a season best four touchdowns. and 34-20 after three. and seattle clinging to a 34-30 lead. and former star marshawn lynch broke through the line and simply refuses to go down. look at him go. every saint seemed to have a shot but couldn't bring him down. 67 yards later he is in the end zone. a little tired but he gets in. seahawks win 41-36 and advance to the second round. and when a guy screws up and wants forgiveness he often buys his wife or girlfriend some flowers or jewelry. in this case of the miami dolphin, they go with the old contract extension. after flying across the country to interview jim harbaugh, owner steven ross returned home and tried to patch things up with current head coach stony spirano by giving him a two year contract extension. stanford, arizona basketball game was postponed due to the shootings in tucson

where the arizona congress woman gabrielle giffords was shot while holding a meeting with voters. and it will be rescheduled tomorrow morning. and cal and tempe, the pac- 10 victory, and the bears jumped out to a big early lead against arizona state. and the freshman for two of the 17. he takes those. cal led by as many as 15 in the first half. the home team made it a game. ty abbot, one of the four threes. asu is within one. that is as close as they would get. cal had an answer for every one. guiterrez had a game high 21 points as the bears hold off arizona state 65-61. over on the women's side, scores for you. stanford blew out arizona state, 82-35 for the 54th win at maples pavilion and cal finishes off the sweep of arizona schools with the 80-60 win against the wild cats. when boston college takes the field tomorrow at at&t park in the kraft fight hunger bowl,

and that is where mark hurzlick, the college career could have ended and definitely could have ended a few years earlierkim coyle has the story. >> reporter: boston college gets its strength from the linebacker mark. and he started making plays for the eagles as a freshman. two years later he was an all american but decided to return for his senior season. right when he could have been working out with the new nfl team, in may of 2009, he was diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer. his playing career and much more were in jeopardy. >> when i was first diagnosed, my doctors told me that you know, you're never going to be able to play football again. you're not going to be able to run again. you might be able to jog a little bit but you know, you're going to be very limited athletically for the rest of your life. >> reporter: he underwent eight months of chemotherapy and had

a titanium rod put in his leg. last year, he was a cheerleader for the eagles. as he worked to get back into shape to return to the field. this fall, he finally did. >> i imagined that day in my head, every day, for those 600 day, you know, picturing running out of the tunnel with my team, and the emotions all came back, for running on the field, but once i got on the field shall it was business as usual. >> reporter: he will play his final game this sunday, in the kraft fight hunger bowl. after that, he will get ready for an nfl career. a much different person than he was two years ago. >> i don't want to be just mark the football player anymore. i want to be the football player who overcame cancer. because you learn from people like teddy bruschi who had a stroke, and lance armstrong, with what he has done. and the way they embraced what happened to them, and helped support other people, it is kind of where i want to go with this. as many people as i can help, get my story out to, get hope
